BROWSER PROBLEMS
If you are using browsers other or older than Netscape 3.x or IE 3.x, this site may not work properly for you. You may find that you have difficulty getting into the password-protected areas of this site or that you are not able to view the frames. The problem is that earlier browsers (especially AOL broaswers) are incompatible with recent HTML coding. There are two ways around this:

  1. For AOL users: AOL offers an upgraded browser that supports the new code we're using. Some people get a prompt on logout to install the new software; others don't. If you don't, go to keyword: ie browser (not case-sensitive) and follow the instructions to download and install the new software. The updated software package has tested out fine on the new site: if you still have problems after installing, contact AOL tech support and they'll be able to help.

  2. Everybody: You can also download and install Netscape 3.x or Internet Explorer 3.x or higher from the sites on this page. AOL users will have to connect to AOL with your current browser, minimize it (or close the window on a Mac) and then start up and run the newer browser. This is not as elegant as the solution above, but it does allow you to run the very latest software (IE 4.x or Netscape Communicator 4.x).

DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING NEW SOFTWARE
Please note that downloading software usually just copies and installer to your hard drive and is not the same as installing it. The Microsoft page below automates the install or update process somewhat for PC users; users of other platforms may have to install that software normally. Normal installation procedure is:

  1. Download the software (the intaller) to your hard drive. It is usually a good idea to put the new software in a folder all by itself so that temporary install files don't get mixed in with old files--this is particularly true for PC users, for whom the new software will most likely end up in C:\temp by default. Put the software in C:\temp\newsoftware to be safe.

  2. Disconnect from the internet and quit all running applications.

  3. Double-click on the installer (the icon of the new software). THat should start the install procedure. Follow the instructions on the screen. When in doubt, select "easy install" and otherwise take the defaults.

The above procedure does not apply to Linux users. For help with platforms other than the mac or pc, contact the acr webmaster at webmaster@acr.org.

LOST DOWNLOADS
Downloaded files will most likely appear on the Macintosh desktop and in the C:/ drive or your home directory on a PC. However, if you lose the file after it gets downloaded, the easiest way to find it is by looking at the site from which it came, getting the filename, and using the "find" feature on your machine (under the apple on Macs, or in the Start menu on Win95/NT) to locate it. All links on this site, and most elsewhere, list the name of the file to be downloaded. If it isn't listed, later browsers display the filename and path at the bottom of the window when you mouse over the link you chose to get the download.
